Hello and welcome to the Year 1 webpage. In Year 1 we do so many exciting things and hope that you really enjoy the year with us. Here you will find many helpful documents and pictures which should give a great overview of what happens in Year 1 throughout the year. We update the page frequently so please keep popping on to have a look and see what’s new. We will upload all important letters that we send out onto here as a back up for you and if you ever need to contact us our email addresses are listed below for your reference. We do our best to respond to emails as soon as possible within working hours, usually within 24 hours but of course you can always ring school or speak to us in person at the end of the day if you prefer.

Important Information for Parents
Year 1 Curriculum
Below are details of the curriculum that we follow in Year 1. The majority of reading is taught through Read Write Inc (RWI) lessons which are specifically tuned into each child’s reading level, these skills are then enhanced and paired with writing speaking and listening skills during daily English lessons. The curriculum document below shows what texts and tasks we cover during the year in these lessons.

PSHE and RSE in year 1
Please see the documents below to find out how we will be approaching the teaching of PSHE (Personal and Social Health Education) and RSE (Relationship and Sex Education) within Year 1 here at Northern. It is quite detailed but only because we want to be very open with what your child is being taught and to ensure that as parents you have all the facts. By doing so we hope to maintain a good partnership and working relationship with you as parents to ensure that we are providing the best education for your child together. Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
Homework
Homework in Year 1 consists mainly of reading as it is the key focus for the year group. Learning to read is essential and impacts almost every other area of the curriculum throughout a child’s educational journey both here at Northern and beyond. Due to this we ask that you please listen to your child read as often as possible at home to support and consolidate what we do in school. Reading at home really makes a big difference to a child’s reading development which is why little and often is the best approach. 5-10 mins at a time, at least 3 times a week is ideal. Ask your child to read different pages, re-read pages to build fluency, find specific words or explain what is happening in the story. All of these things help massively.
Further on into the year, usually after Christmas we will start to give your child simple spellings to learn and be informally tested on. These will be linked to their Read Write Inc. levels and will therefore be appropriate for every different ability. Supporting your child to learn these 5 weekly spellings will be greatly appreciate.

Our Classroom
Here is a little peek into the world of Year 1. We have a reading area where you can sit and read a book perhaps to a cuddly friend or maybe you would like to chill out in our calm area and see which Zone of Regulation best suits you today? We have our maths area and our phonics wall to help with our writing which will help us when we are completing our rainbow challenges. What will be in the curiosity cube for us to draw and write about this week and whose work will make it onto our Proud Pegs for all to see? In our first week we discuss and talk through our Class Charter together which we all agree on to help us make sure that we work as a team to learn and be happy together.
