Welcome to Year 3! This year we’ll be learning all sorts of new things about the local area, light and shadow, how our bodies and skeletons work, the Stone Age, Romans, plants, the Lake District, volcanoes, Earthquakes, swimming and so much more! We always strive to make our class a place where we celebrate our work, never give up on challenges and treat each other with kindness and respect. PSHE & RSE Information
Please see the documents below to find out how we will be approaching the teaching of PSHE (Personal and Social Health Education) and RSE (Relationship and Sex Education) within Year 3 here at Northern. It is quite detailed but only because we want to be very open with what your child is being taught and to ensure that as parents you have all the facts. By doing so we hope to maintain a good partnership and working relationship with you as parents to ensure that we are providing the best education for your child together. Homework
Everyone at Northern is an explorer at school. We explore and celebrate our local environment, the diversity of the people within our community and others and are aware of the rights we have as children. Through lessons, assemblies, clubs and discussions we are able to express our own opinions and celebrate those of others.
Being a Northern Explorer means continuing these experiences and learning journeys outside of the school environment.
Take a look at our homework which is aimed at all children across school and as the booklet says, there is no right or wrong way to complete it.
We would love you to share your home learning with us throughout the year and then we can share pictures on here, in assembly and in class.
This homework will be supplemented by specific maths and English related homework.

Autumn 1 Timetable
Our learning this half term
Big draw!
Today the children have taken part in an exciting event called “the big draw”.
Before swimming this morning, the children designed rabbits using their own patterns. What made this really cool, was that each rabbit had 15 sections to draw 15 different patterns by 15 different children, completed by a child designing a section, then passing it onto the next child. ✍️
The event continued into the afternoon, when after our maths lesson, the children joined the rest of the school in adding their own creative drawings to a giant piece of paper in the hall.
A great day with lots accomplished and created!
Puppet masters
This afternoon year 3 have been using different materials to create a shadow puppet show! 🎬
Children were tasked to work in groups of 4 and plan out their show, deciding on what theme they wanted, the roles of each member and what materials they’d require.
The children have worked extremely well together in their groups, demonstrating communication, coordination and creativity.
As part of science this term, year 3 have been learning all about light and shadow and today was the last lesson for that topic.
Tomorrow, we are very excited to watch the groups perform their shows.
Carbon Monoxide Workshop
This morning year 3 have become carbon monoxide safety experts!
The children have learnt about where carbon monoxide comes from, signs of carbon monoxide, symptoms of CO poisoning and how to protect themselves and their homes.
They have also enjoyed carrying out practical scenarios of what to do/what happens when carbon monoxide is prevalent.
Thanks to Safety Seymour, each child will be coming home with a CO safety bag full of information, activities and a CO alarm for your homes.
Netball
An active start to our Friday morning with a netball session from coach Paul.
Shadow Science
In science we investigated how shadows change depending on the distance of the light source.
The children loved using the torches and carried out their investigations like true scientists.
Swimming
Year 3 had a great time swimming yesterday morning!
The children showed great enthusiasm, perseverance and determination!
Coding
Timers, bugs, algorithms, programming, all part of our computing coding unit this half term! We used a timer command in this session to great a magic show with disappearing rabbits and magicians!

PE fun
Lots of fun had in gymnastics yesterday using the apparatus 🤸♂️
Computer Art
Today in art we attempted to use the laptops to create impressionist drawings of fruit.
Despite proving to be much more challenging than with pencils and their books, the children gave it a good go and demonstrated great team work with their partners, which was one of the aims of the lesson.
Marvelous Maths
Only managed a few photos at the end of the lesson, but once again the year 3’s as a whole worked extremely hard in maths and impressed me.
Today we began looking at division methods.
We used arrays and real life examples of how we can share things equally between a given number.
We also simplified the worded questions by underlining the information which was particularly important for us to be able to answer the questions.
At the beginning some children commented “this looks confusing” but by the end most were saying “this is easy”!
Great effort by all and another successful maths lesson.
Lots of learning
Today in maths the children learnt about how to complete times tables using the grid method.
I was so pleased with how quickly the children seemed to grasp the process of working the questions out and their effort and attainment really put a smile on my face.
After a great swimming lesson and an interesting English lesson focusing on adverbs, we had another exciting computing lesson.
The focus today was for the children to understand cell addresses.
Firstly, the children played a game where they had to observe a treasure map and evaluate a key which showed the location of hidden items.
Once the children completed this, they created their own ones!
Reading teddies
To make reading at home even more engaging, each child has adopted their very own reading teddy! Upon receiving their teddies their reactions were priceless and a nice moment to be apart of.
Children will be encouraged to read aloud to their teddies at home, which parents can record in their reading log. Even just five minutes a day can equate to almost one million words a year! We’re hoping that this idea will encourage children to enjoy reading at home while giving them a sense of responsibility.
For every day that a child reads at home, they will receive a raffle ticket. Each Friday, we will draw two raffle tickets. The two chosen will be able to get a prize from our prize box. This means that the more times a child reads at home, the better their chance!
